Colleagues,
Nearly three weeks have passed since three Bechtel employees tragically lost their lives and two others sustained injuries during construction activities at Port Arthur LNG.
The entire Sempra Infrastructure team is devastated by this profound loss. Our deepest, heartfelt sympathy goes out to the families, loved ones and colleagues mourning Reginald Magee, who was 41 years old and worked as a rigger, Felipe Mendez, who was 25 years old and worked as an ironworker and Felix Lopez Sr., who was 42 years old and worked as a carpenter.
Over the last two weeks, Sempra Infrastructure has conducted multiple safety-stand downs at every operation location, project site and office to reinforce that safety is at the center of everything we do and reiterate the importance of the stop work authority each employee, contractor and subcontractor has.
Subject to applicable governmental regulations and legal orders, Bechtel is slowly restarting work at the Port Arthur LNG construction site in certain areas, with the focus on verifying that all construction areas are in safe condition. It is critical that every employee of Bechtel and its subcontractors understands and shares Sempra Infrastructure’s commitment to owning safety, individual stop work authority and ensuring that everyone returns home safely at the end of the day.
Safety must be the foundation of everything we do. In the wake of this tragedy, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fostering a culture where safety is a deeply ingrained value guiding every decision, action and project. Together we must help ensure a safe workplace for all – whether it be at our operations locations or in our offices.
Our hearts are with the families of Reginald, Felipe, Felix and all of our colleagues at Port Arthur LNG and Bechtel. We stand together with every Sempra Infrastructure employee in support, reflection and an unwavering dedication to safeguarding our workforce.
Sincerely,
Justin
