Sempra Infrastructure is developing the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) project, a proposed carbon capture storage facility, designed to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from Cameron LNG and potentially other industrial sources.

About the Project

Located west of the town of Hackberry, Louisiana, Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) is being designed to advance the company’s net-zero solutions goal by producing cleaner liquefied natural gas (LNG) for Cameron LNG’s customers. HCS is expected to be one of the first world-class carbon sequestration operations in North America.

This facility will be constructed primarily for the capture, transportation and storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) from multiple industrial sources.

With the development of this project, the CO2 would be captured at the LNG facility and transported by pipeline to a compression facility on land owned by LA Storage, a subsidiary of Sempra Infrastructure. It will then be permanently stored in a saline aquifer using an injection well located approximately 8,000 feet under the surface of the earth with a capacity of up to two million tonnes of CO2 per year.

The proposed project will consist of a CO2 compression and processing facility and include pipelines to transport the CO2 to the sequestration well. Sempra Infrastructure intends to co-locate the CO2 pipelines with other existing pipeline infrastructure to minimize the impacts on landowners.

In 2021, HCS started the permitting process by filing an application for a Class VI Injection well permit from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, applications were also filed with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources.

Development of the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration project remains subject to definitive agreements, obtaining the necessary permits, and all partners reaching a final investment decision.


The HCS project will be built to the highest industry standards, using proven and well-regulated sequestration protocols in the energy industry.

CO2 injection wells are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency with standards that provide comprehensive requirements for siting, construction, operation, testing, monitoring, and eventually permanent closure.

Hackberry Carbon Sequestration is part of an initiative focused on sustainability as the world transitions to a low carbon future. The development of HCS will help to lower the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at LNG and other industrial facilities while working to provide decarbonization solutions to customers in North America and global energy markets.

Additionally, this project is expected to create approximately 30 acres of new wetland marsh through beneficial use of dredge material.
