At Sempra Infrastructure, we put the health, safety and security of our workforce, customers and communities at the center of everything we do.

Our Director of Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), J. Kevin Selby, shares how Sempra Infrastructure is committed to championing health, safety, and security programs that protect our people, projects, operations, and communities where we work.

Tell us about yourself and your role at Sempra Infrastructure

I began my Sempra career in 2013 as the Director of HSSE and Compliance for Sempra International overseeing the programs in Mexico, Chile and Peru. After the sale of the South American assets in 2019, I was asked to join the LNG business as their Director of HSSE. I’ve continued in that role as we transitioned into Sempra Infrastructure.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

Sempra Infrastructure has a collaborative-based safety culture that allows me to engage directly with the various organizations to collectively identify and mitigate possibly unsafe conditions. It is through these respectful collaborations that we strengthen our Safety First culture across the whole of Sempra Infrastructure.

How does Sempra Infrastructure reinforce a Safety First culture for our employees and contractors?

We reinforce our Safety First values by actively listening to the concerns raised by our employees, contractors and the community. This feedback helps the HSSE organization to continuously improve our processes for worker safety and emergency preparedness and response.

What does achieving world-class safety mean to you?

“World-class safety” means a lot of things to different people. For me, we achieve world-class safety every time a person in our offices, operations and construction projects reference our strong safety culture. I often hear comments such as “At Sempra Infrastructure, we don’t compromise safety; it is our priority.” Our strong safety performance is a direct result of our employees’ commitment to a Safety First culture.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. How can we all be better safety role models?

Not to sound cliché, but the old line is true: “If you see something, say something.” We actively promote and emphasize our Stop Work Authority policy that allows anyone to stop an unsafe action or condition without fear of retaliation. Our workforce’s confidence to issue a Stop Work Order is a key component of our Safety-First culture.
