MEXICO CITY, Feb. 9, 2023. – Tania Ortiz Mena, president of Sempra Infrastructure in Mexico, a subsidiary of Sempra (NYSE: SRE) (BMV: SRE), announced today the launch of the Sempra Infrastructure Foundation and its commitment to donate $30 million pesos this year, focusing on two core areas: to drive energy and environmental education and research, and fund projects that strengthen public energy security in Mexico.
“Sempra Infrastructure is not only working to build a stronger Mexico through the development of energy infrastructure, but through our Foundation, we will also support projects and initiatives that improve the quality of life and promote the development of the communities to which we belong,” said Ortiz Mena.
Sempra Infrastructure Foundation’s Pillars of Action
One of the core areas of focus will be to enhance the education and skills of young Mexicans by funding scholarships with an emphasis on educational programs related to energy and environmental care. The Foundation also proposes to develop and/or support, in the medium term, technological research and innovation for a sustainable energy future in the framework of the fight against climate change.
The Foundation will also support projects that aim to enhance access to energy in coordination with some of Mexico’s most needed and vulnerable communities, by providing electricity produced with clean and renewable sources in benefit of children and senior homes.
The Foundation will continue working alongside various state and national organizations in Mexico as part as its commitment to continue helping those most in need.
These pillars are aligned to Sempra Infrastructure’s long-term vision and commitment to Mexico and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Objectives, focused on guaranteeing access to affordable energy, combating climate change and ensuring prosperity for all.
The Sempra Infrastructure Foundation was launched at an event attended by strategic allies of the Foundation, including Fernando Suinaga, President of the Mexican Red Cross in Mexico; Ana Lía García, General Director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) Foundation; David Romero, President of the Children’s Protection Foundation; as well as beneficiaries such as the Asociación Mexicana de Ayuda a Niños con Cáncer de Chihuahua (Mexican Support Association for Children with Cancer in Chihuahua), Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior (the Technical and Higher Education Center) (CETYS Baja California) and Pronatura Noreste. Also in attendance were representatives of state and Federal authorities and Sempra Infrastructure employees.
The Sempra Infrastructure Foundation evolves from the IEnova Foundation, a charitable institution authorized by the Tax Administration Service (SAT) that was founded in 2015 and has donated approximately $190 million pesos to date benefiting 800,000 people through 240 educational and environmental projects, focused on vulnerable groups and community services in Mexico. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Foundation formed alliances to mitigate its effects. These efforts represented an investment of $72.2 million Mexican pesos in two programs: medical protection equipment and supplies (oxygen concentrators, ambulances with their supplies and equipment, Tyvek personal protection suits, oximeters, health sector hospital equipment, among others) and food security with the delivery of more than 45,000 food parcels to vulnerable families.
