Women’s Equality Day commemorates the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of gender. At Sempra LNG, we celebrate women every day by fostering a diverse and inclusive company committed to championing people.
Our internal Growing Responsibilities and Opportunities for Women (GROW) program aims to empower and champion women at Sempra LNG. Tina Chen, senior director – human resources, diversity & inclusion at Sempra LNG, provides insight into the GROW program and shares how Sempra LNG remains committed to creating a supportive and inclusive culture.
Q: What is GROW’s Mission?
GROW’s mission is to be the premier LNG champion for women’s career development and to continue to grow responsibilities and opportunities for women, hence the GROW acronym.
This employee resource group is a way for us to help develop our female employees and their careers. Whether it’s through education, mentoring or opportunities to lead projects, our goal is to provide the tools and resources for career advancement and visibility across the organization.
It’s really important that we champion gender equality. Unfortunately, women in the energy industry continue to be underrepresented and it’s our hope that GROW can be an avenue for resources, discussion and change.
Q: What inspires you about the GROW program?
What has been really inspiring about our GROW program is how our organization as a whole has embraced the opportunity to learn more and be better advocates and allies for women in the energy industry. It’s built awareness and excitement that has been inspirational to see. We have really strong executive sponsorship of this program; our President and COO Lisa Glatch is an active champion of GROW. It’s an initiative that she’s very passionate about, and our employees are very excited and passionate about it as well.
Q: GROW just introduced a new subcommittee called GROW Ambassadors. How will the new subcommittee support GROW’s mission?
Our current GROW Committee consists of female employees at the Director or above level, as well as a selected number of senior male leaders. The new GROW sub-committee – GROW Ambassadors, will bring fresh perspectives and continue to build on the program’s mission. GROW Ambassadors are female managers and leaders who will support and execute GROW’s initiatives via event planning, communication, networking, education and new programs.
Q: What does Women’s Equality Day mean to you?
Women’s Equality Day represents the opportunity to take action and do better. Even today, women continue to fight for full equality. I’m proud to be part of an organization that embraces diversity and actively promotes inclusivity and growth opportunities for women. We all have the opportunity to be active allies and support each other in the workplace and in our communities.
